How to make sure your child doesn’t get an attitude

There are many attitude problems that children suffer from that can have effects on their behaviour. These include such personality traits as laziness, selfishness, jealousy, egoistic behaviour and lying. If you have a child who is showing some of these personality traits then it is important that you understand that in order to tackle them, you must get to the root of the problem.

Selfish behaviour can be something that is instilled by parents at an early age. For example, at the dinner table, the parents might give the child their food first and tells them that it has been specially created for them, then they are going to feel self entitled and as if they are the most important person present.

This gives the child the ongoing impression that it is the parent’s responsibility to satisfy all of his various wishes. This will lead to problems later in life as when the child realises they can’t get everything they want, they will throw tantrums.

It is all too common the parents are upset because their children are not learning manners properly. There are certain ways in which you can teach a child proper etiquette and one of these ways can be getting them to interact with other family members, such as grandparents, in a respectful way.

By telling them how to behave in the sort of relationship, you prepare them for interaction with the real world and will ensure they have good manners instilled in their personality.

Table manners are something that are also important, and these can be learned by parents encouraging good behaviour at the dinner table from an early age. Again, inviting extended family to dinner, can expose children to manners and encourage them to adopt these manners themselves. Encouraging positive personality traits in your children can be difficult, but it is a worthwhile endeavour.

Fixers.org.uk has been created as part of the collaboration between Groundwork UK, The Children’s Society and the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) in a Home Office-funded ‘Choices’ programme.   Choices helps the voluntary and community sector to prevent and reduce substance misuse and related offending by vulnerable people aged 10-19 years.

The website draws on material created as part of PSBT’s ITV Fixers initiative supporting young people to undertake social action campaigns to benefit their communities.  More than 6000 young people have become Fixers since 2008, and many of them are concerned about substance misuse.  Some have overcome personal battles with drugs or alcohol.

As well as creating Fixers.org.uk, the Groundwork/TCS/PSBT Choices partnership is working in 10 distinct areas of England and Wales in projects that support vulnerable children and teenagers to be more aware of the impact of substance misuse.  In some projects, young people are undertaking their own Fixers campaigns and creating their own new resources for Fixers.org.uk.

Margo Horsley, Chief Executive of PSBT, say: “There is an honesty, like no other, when young people want to tell their stories about the impact of drugs and alcohol on their lives because they want to prevent other young people from going through the same thing. And young people listening just know it!  Some 80 Fixers, from all over the country, volunteered to participate in this initiative and I really admire their commitment and passion to make a difference.”

In 2010 ITV Fixers won several accolades in the Children & Young People Now Positive Images Awards, including Best Media Portrayal of Young People.

The best ways to raise a responsible child

If you want to raise a responsible child it’s going to take a lot of hard work as a parent, it seems as if today parents are not willing to put in this hard work because more and more irresponsible children are entering society. While the value of hiring a nanny, or utilising a daycare centre, should not be underestimated, it is important to realise that this can damage your child’s ability to become a responsible citizen.

It is important that as a parent you take time to make sure that your child understands authority and doesn’t want to grow up fighting it. Parents must understand that it is not an easy ride raising a child, especially if you want them to be responsible, but the efforts are of course, worth it in the end.

You should also teach a child about responsibility and you can start instilling this value at a very early age. Even a toddler can be told the importance of putting his toys away himself, washing dirty dishes, or putting clothes ready for laundry.

Not only will this make your child responsible, but it will also help them to be better prepared for coping in the real world. By making your child do these tasks, they will understand how the real world works, and how there won’t always be someone doing everything for them.

Some of the basic activities that you can make your child do are things such as putting their shoes away, holding cutlery in the right way and being responsible for dressing themselves in the morning.

This will encourage a lack of dependence in your child and, as well as benefiting them long-term, will make your job as a parent slightly easier. You should always make sure that your child has space to store everything.

Teenage girls write the ultimate guide to parenting teenagers

The confusing mood swings and mysterious mood swings of teenagers in the 21st century have been explained by two schoolgirls from Surrey. Megan Lovegrove and Louise Bedwell from Sutton is Surrey are both 17 and have spent the past 6 months researching their insightful parenting manual called ‘Teenagers Explained’. This is the first time a book of this kind has been written by teenagers.

Louise said that they wanted it to be a manual that told it how it was from the perspective of a teenager. She went on to say that if you think about it, the authors of all the other parenting books are all ancient, and are at least 40! While most adults think they still young when they are 40, the reality is that they are way out of touch with teenagers.

Everyone is talking about ‘Teenagers Explained’, and the book back deals with nearly every awkward topic related to teens that you can think of. Will Megan and Louise’s parents be embarrassed by it? Megan grimaced when asked this question, and says that she would be very embarrassed to show them it.

She added her parents hadn’t read it yet and they, like the 2 girls, don’t quite seemed to have grasped the excitement of it all, and that they have actually written their own book and had it published. Megan also said that they all went wow when her grandma googled her.

Statutory parental leave extended to 16 weeks

This month, the period of entitlement for statutory parental leave was increased to 16 weeks. The problem is, however, that many employers are still unaware that parental leave actually exists, while others get it confused with maternity and paternity leave. In their employment law advice guide, Peninsula fully explain the difference, as well as telling you who is eligible for what type of leave.

Parental leave lets employees with 12 months service to take unpaid leave to care for their family, and can be taken immediately after any maternity or paternity leave, or at any time up until the child’s fifth birthday.

Individual parental leave is available for each parent who is named on the child’s birth or adoption certificate, and is applicable to each child they have, but leave can neither be shared nor transferred between the parents. In short, parental leave entitlement allows you employees to take up to 4 months off work unpaid, so you may need to arrange cover.

Meanwhile, employees who take maternity leave are eligible for statutory maternity pay. This is set at 90 per cent of the employee’s normal earnings, with no upper limit, for six weeks. For the next 33 weeks, the standard rate of £135.45 per week applies.

Paternity leave is also paid, but dads are only eligible for the statutory £135.45 for two weeks. The only exception is if the mother has returned to work and stopped receiving her statutory maternity pay; in this scenario, the father or partner can claim it in her stead for up to 26 weeks.

How to stop a childs fears turning into a phobia

When a child is growing up they have to deal with a great many fears, both in the home and at school. These are often quite complex for them and might include taking a big test, dealing with a bully, or simply starting at a new school.

A recent study has shown that parents might not be taking their children’s fears seriously enough. Parents often think that their child’s worries are not very serious and do not address them properly. However, in order to foster a child’s development in the best way possible, it is important that parents understand the fears of their children and deal with them adequately.

Those who do not address the children’s fears properly might be inadvertently causing their children to develop depression later in life, or even possibly suffer from panic attacks. This article is going to look at a few techniques that can be used by parents to help children overcome what they are afraid of.

When children are younger they are generally afraid of irrational things, such as ghosts or the dark. As they grow up they begin to understand that these fears are not justified and instead become afraid of things which can actually hurt them, such as insects, thunderstorms, or animals. This is also the stage where they realise that closing their eyes won’t simply make the problem go away.

There is a delicate balance that must be struck when parents are dealing with their children’s fears. They must be careful not to comfort their children too much when they fear something as this will only encourage the child to continue fearing it, to get attention from the parent.

They should also deal with the fear properly and not punish their children for being afraid of something. Distraction is often a good option and parents can encourage their children to sing a song in order to distract themselves from their fears.

This distraction method can be a good way to calm children down when they are afraid of something and after this it is possible for parents to move into strategies that can allow the child to overcome their fear in the long-term.

A phobia is something different from what most people understand it to be. Most people think that a phobia is simply being afraid of something. In actual fact it is a condition where a child has an irrational fear of something and it goes beyond normal fear.

They will be afraid of something and even once it has been removed they will continue to suffer the after-effects of the fear. If these phobias are not tackled early on, then children can develop more complicated conditions such as getting panic attacks simply from thinking about their phobia.

Fears are something that every child develops and getting children to conquer their phobias is a challenging part of parenting. You should deal with the problem head-on and always encourage your child to understand that there fears are unjustified in the vast majority of cases.

Once these early childhood phobias have passed, children tend to fear things that are much more familiar to adults, such as the fear of illness and death. It is later in childhood that children realise how vulnerable they are to death and illness and the lack of control they have over these things.

Teenagers can be the hardest test of parenting skills

Parenting a teenager can be a very challenging process and many parents will often find that they have reached their wits end. If you find yourself in this situation then it is important that you remain very calm and handle the situation confidently. You should look back on your days as a teenager and remember that you were probably also quite difficult for your parents at times.

It is also important to remember that there is an increased pressure on teenagers today because they are constantly connected to the online world, through mobile phones and the Internet.

It is important that you don’t worry too much about dealing with your teenager, worrying never helps the situation and it can often prevent you from taking the necessary action. If you follow some of the tips listed in this article then they should ease your worries about dealing with your teenager.

Some parents often take a good cop bad cop role in the bringing up of the teenager but this is something that should be carefully avoided. While it might work in the movies, a teenager will see straight through it and they will simply use it to manipulate their parents.

The only way this can be avoided is to present a united front to your teenager, if a punishment is invoked by one parent, then both parents must make absolutely sure that they stick with the punishment.

One mistake that many parents make it’s trying to be the teenager’s friend. You should realise that at this point in their life your child does not need an extra friend, but they need a parent. If you try and take the role of a friend then things are going to become complicated when you have to discipline your teenager.

When they get into serious trouble they will find it difficult to take your punishment seriously if you have become too friendly with them. Remember to treat your teenager as your child, and not as your friend.

Establishing boundaries that can never be moved is very important. Fixed boundaries give your teenager something tangible, they know that if they go over them then they will be punished.

If, as parents, you sometimes change this boundary then the teenager will try and push things with you to see what they can get away with. The punishment for overstepping boundaries should always be enforced, and your teenager should know the exact consequences of their actions.

Similarly, it is also important that, as well as boundaries, you set regulations and rules for the home. You must make a serious effort to enforce these and make sure that there are appropriate consequences for your teenager if they violate the rules. Not only will these rules make living in your house easier, they will also make sure that you instil good values in your teenager. By learning to obey rules at a younger age, they will be able to understand the rules of the adult world when they finally get there.

Another important way you can prepare your teenager for the adult world is to allow them to make some decisions alone. There is often a fine line between discipline and allowing your teenager a certain amount of autonomy. It is important that parents realise that some amount of freedom is essential to a teenager as it will allow them to develop a confident decision-making process.

You should allow them to make important decisions about issues that you feel are not as important as others. For example, if your child wants to get an extreme haircut, let them, the hair will grow back. This teaches them a lesson about responsibility and decision-making.

Looking for a used BMW for sale

Those in the market for a decent second hand car have a lot of options open to them as to what cars are out there and where they can get them from. There are also dozens of reasons why you may be looking to upgrade your car; your trusty old banger may be well past its sell by date, or your sporty cabriolet that you love so much may not be the perfect car anymore now that you have a family, or you might simply fancy a change.

The fact is that all these, and many more, are valid reasons for wanting a new car of the second hand variety. New car sales are in somewhat of a slump at the moment, which is no real surprise considering the current state of the economy, and whilst the cost of keeping a car on the road is rising steadily, there are still millions of people who would sacrifice other things to pay for all the costs that come with having your own car.

A car is a necessity if you have a family for example, as there is so much running around where families are concerned that public transport isn’t a viable option when it comes to things like Julie having to be at her ballet class, and ten minutes late Kyle has to be at football training at the other side of town. While it would seem fairly obvious what you need to look for in a family car, men and women tend to have rather different ideas.

While he may be searching for a used BMW for sale amongst the second hand cars, she will be looking for a sturdy, reliable car with plenty of room in the back, four doors and a spacious boot. Men often see the cars they drive as singletons as somewhat of a status symbol, and a few are loath to give that up to drive to bulkier family car, but once you have children that’s just something that has to be done.

When you are looking for your first family car there are other things, apart from the aforementioned that you need to consider. Safety, economy, reliability and such things as ease of access are all at the top of the list. Is it child seat compatible and are the rear windows big enough and low for the kids to see out of. Those little people in the back need to be considered too, and by keeping all this in mind you should have no problems.
