Couples marrying in haste more likely to divorce quickly

A new study by Divorce-Online, based on analysis of  29,000 divorce petitions. has found that 3 per cent of divorces filed in England and Wales are divorces where the couple have separated after less than one year of marriage. These have been dubbed as “flash divorces” as they happen as quickly as the marriage began.

Mark Keenan the founder and Managing Director of Divorce-Online believes that the majority of these “flash divorces” result from “flash marriages” where the couple getting married have known each other for less than a year. He said “By reading through a decent sample of divorce petitions I could see that the common thread was that a lot of the couples had married quickly after meeting which would suggest that there is a pretty strong correlation between the speed at which you get married and the likely hood of a “flash divorce” happening not too soon thereafter”.

82% percent of the petitions were filed on the fact of unreasonable behaviour and the remainder were for adultery.

Divorce-Online.Co.Uk is the UK’s largest provider of uncontested divorce proceedings and accounted for 1 in 20 of all divorce petitions filed in England and Wales in 2009.
