Lisa Glossop, who at 25 stone found herself with blocked fallopian tubes and a husband with a low sperm count, had all the odds stacked against her given that she was unable to lose weight via dieting and was too large for IVF treatment. In fact, doctors told the couple that they had little chance of ever conceiving.

However, one gynecologist, told Glossop who is aged 33, that if she could lose weight and quit smoking she would be a candidate for IVF.

As a result, three years later Glossop underwent gastric bypass surgery which allowed her to lose 13 stone. Then after two IVF attempts she was finally able to conceive and 14 weeks ago gave birth to a 7lb 12oz healthy baby girl named Gracie.

Glossop, stated that the process was the most dramatic time of her life and her emotions were all over the map crying one moment and then laughing the next. She also stated that when the first IVF treatment failed she felt as if she had lost all her chances of having a baby.

During the second IVF treatment, six eggs were taken out of which two were implanted, and out of those Gracie was conceived.
The couple was married in 2003 and stated they had no idea conception would be such a struggle at the time.

The year a child turns 14 they become an adolescent, which means that as a parent you will need to learn to accept a new child in the place of the one that you are accustomed to, since most teenagers experience a large amount of personal change during this tumultuous year.

By age 14, a child has started to forge a group identity and is now concerned with how they look to others, versus how they really feel about themselves. They will also start to enter into their own subculture of teenage life, which will become easily noticeable by their dressing style, music, bedroom décor, hairstyle, and the friends they choose to associate with.

Despite these changes, the good news is most of the time a 14 year old will still say that when it comes to advice they count on both their friends and parents looking for guidelines and criteria as they start to pass through the many rites of aging. For parents, accomplishments in terms of school, camps, family, and religion should be augmented and celebrated with dinners, parties, and by paying special attention to when banquets and award dinners are.

Another task that a parent has to deal with once their child turns 14 is learning to listen and value their child’s opinion. This does not mean that you should let a child rule their life, but it does mean sitting down and honestly and calmly talking with them even if they give off the air that you are the last person they want to see.

The studies show that music instruction helps the child develop emotional and intellectual skills, facilitates their learning, and strengthens them in other academic areas (for instance, math and reading). There’s even evidence that it can boost a child’s IQ.

Other studies have reached similar conclusions. A University of Wisconsin study, for instance, showed that three and four year olds who were given piano lessons for six months performed about 34% better on IQ tests than children who did not receive the lessons.

According to child development experts, when children are about three, they start taking an interest in various musical activities. That makes this a perfect time for teachers and parents to start mixing music with fun activities that require the child to move—activities such as dancing, jumping, clapping and waving. Likewise, sing-along games work well for initiating movement in the children and bringing them together for group activities.

Four and five year old kids have become more consistent in music-making and also have begun to understand the song lyrics better. At this age, children are more ready to sit still for short performances or to listen to musical recordings. It’s suggested that parents complement the education they’re receiving at school with teaching music that gives valuable lessons. Good activities for the 4s and 5s will include lessons in writing lyrics, music appreciation playing instruments, and creating their own melodies.

At age’s six to 10, children are able to start learning about musical structure. Teachers and parents can use repetition, rhymes and experimenting with sounds to help with reading and speech development. These years are the right time to each children how to play an easy musical instrument (such as the recorder) or for exposing them to choral groups.

While few things are unanimous, educators and child development experts overwhelmingly agree now: Getting kids engaged in music is good for their academic growth. Don’t resist this fact, but rather, encourage their musical growth, and see them grow in other way.
