Back pain in children

If your teenager or child is experiencing back pains then it is very important that you see a doctor who can help determine the condition that is causing the problem. Most of the time children with back pain have simply strained or overused a muscle, and such light tissue damage can be treated easily, simply by giving it rest.

However, there are some cases where the back pain may be caused by something else and in these cases the injuries can be very serious. Therefore, if back pain is acute or lasts for a long period of time, it is important that these causes are ruled out.

Most parents are not strangers to activity related accidents and injuries, since these are natural childhood occurrences. Despite this fact, there are some things that you can do to prevent certain injuries. These include making sure that your child always wears his or her seat belt while they are in the car, and that they wear the right safety gear while playing sports.

To help prevent back pain, you want to make sure that your children wear their backpacks securely by tightening the straps so that the pack fits directly against the back. You should also make sure that the heavier books are located near the back of the backpack, so that the weight is distributed evenly.

Children should not have more than 10% of their body weight inside of their backpack in order to prevent excessive strain. Some of the serious conditions that could be the cause of back pain in children include a spinal tumour, spondylolisthesis, and spinal infection, but these are not very common.
